GREETINGS, ASSESSORS!

You’re frustrated, we get it. You want to take on the world - to be the best assessor that you can every be, but there’s very little PRACTICAL training available.

Most CMMC training teaches you what the requirements say. Very little of it trains you to apply them when you're sitting across from an IT director who insists the jump server is Out of Scope because "no CUI is stored on it." Or a CISO who claims FedRAMP authorization covers everything. Or an executive who wants you to exclude the AD domain controllers because remediation would be "too disruptive."

That's the real job. That's what SECTOR 171 trains.

SECTOR 171 puts you in those conversations — under a clock, with a character making a plausible wrong argument, and a binary judgment to make. Get it right and the game tells you why. Get it wrong and it's immediate, specific, and pointed. Every question is calibrated to a real mistake that real assessors make in the field. This is not a flashcard app. It is a judgment trainer.

⚡ HOT TAKE MODE

One scenario. Two buttons. Fifteen seconds. No multiple choice — just IN SCOPE or OUT OF SCOPE, MET or NOT MET. The skill that separates good assessors from great ones is instant pattern recognition. Hot Take Mode trains and measures that instinct.

🎯 DOMAIN DRILL

Know from your weakness tracking that Regulatory is where you lose points? Run a Domain Drill: 20 questions from one category, ramped from foundational to expert, with a boss question at the end. Your career accuracy updates after every run so you can track real improvement.

📅 DAILY CHALLENGE

Every day, one complex multi-decision scenario — the same one for everyone. Walk through a full assessment situation across 3–4 sequential judgment calls where each decision affects the next. These are the scenarios that show up in actual close-out briefings.

💀 THE GAUNTLET

Mixed difficulty, all categories, 20 questions, 30-second clock. The ranked leaderboard. A score card that's built for LinkedIn. This is the run that tells you where you actually stand.

📋 REVIEW MISSES

Every question you got wrong is waiting for you after the run — with the correct answer highlighted, the full explanation, and the specific principle you missed. Review Misses is where the real learning happens.

If you're preparing for a CCA or CCP exam, conducting Level 2 assessments, or advising contractors on CMMC compliance — SECTOR 171 is the closest thing to practice runs that exist outside an actual assessment. Start your free trial. Play one Daily Challenge. Run one Hot Take session. You'll know within 10 minutes whether your instincts are calibrated.

Welcome to Sector 171

about the developer

Tara Lemieux is a CMMC practitioner and assessor with field experience across the Defense Industrial Base. SECTOR 171 is built from the scenarios, misconceptions, and edge cases she has encountered in real assessments — the conversations that don't appear in the official training materials but determine whether a practitioner is actually ready for the field.

“SECTOR 171 started as a personal training tool.

I was helping to prepare assessors for a run of back-to-back CMMC assessments and realized that the study materials available — official training, practice exams, regulatory documents — were excellent at teaching what the requirements said. But they fell desperately short in training prospective assessors for the actual experience of sitting across from a systems administrator who insists, with complete confidence, that the SIEM is Out of Scope because "it doesn't store CUI."

So I built SECTOR 171 to help train the judgment muscle. Every question comes from a real scenario — a real argument, a real misconception, a real edge case that I've encountered in actual assessments. The characters making the wrong arguments are based on real people (the names have been changed, but the confidence level has been preserved). The feedback on wrong answers is calibrated to the specific reasoning error, not just the correct answer.

The game has grown into something more than a personal tool. The question bank now covers all four CMMC assessment domains. The modes — Hot Take, Daily Challenge, Domain Drill, the Gauntlet — serve different training needs for different practitioners. The community can submit questions drawn from their own field experience.”

SECTOR 171 is not affiliated with Cyber AB or DoD. It's built for the CMMC community, with the goal of making real assessment readiness accessible and, frankly, more honest about where the gaps are.

FAQs

Why am I charging for this game?

1

Because value isn’t free - and neither is experience, plus - I’m paying the cost for hosting.

You can read 800-171 all day long and still freeze in an assessment. This game offers repetition, pressure and most importantly - judgement training.

Also, I built this instead of sleeping - so yeah, there’s that.

And if you genuinely can’t afford it? I’m not a monster - give me shout and I’ll hook you up.

Can I get a local copy for my organization?

2

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: let’s talk.

Immortality. (Compliance edition).

If your scenario makes it into the game:

  • You’ll get credited (or stay anonymous if you’re feeling spicy)

  • You contribute to the next wave of super awesome CMMC Assessors

  • And, you help to make the game harder… which is the point.

BONUS: If your question is especially evil, I’ll probably love you just a little more.

What makes sector 171 different from everything else out there?

4

Everything else teaches you what the control says.

This game teaches you what it means when it’s 3 pm on day 2 of your assessment and nothing is clean.

Gray areas, edge cases, subtle interpretations - it’s all in there.

If this game made you sweat, swear, or question your life choices…consider feeding the beast!

A small donation of any size helps me:

  • Keep the scenarios and questions fresh

  • Make them meaner (you’re welcome)

  • And continue depriving myself of sleep for YOUR benefit (no guilt there).

It’s totally optional, but deeply appreciated.

Think of this less as a donation and MORE as an investment in making our future assessors slightly more dangerous.
